Zomi Innkuan USA: Advocating for Refugees and Preserving Heritage

By Zomi Press Reporter

ZIUSA’s Refugee Program aims to support Zomi refugees in Malaysia, India, and Thailand. Self-funded by Zomi individuals, the program facilitates the effective resettlement of Zomi refugees worldwide, ensuring their basic needs are met so they can live with dignity and achieve their potential. The program seeks to provide proper treatment and protection for Zomi refugees who have faced persecution based on race, religion, nationality, political opinion, or membership in a particular social group. Collaborating with the U.S. Resettlement Program, the goal is to uphold humanitarian responses and refugee rights.

Vision and Mission

The Zomi Refugee Program envisions a leading network that enhances cultural and community development within the Zomi refugee community, aiding their integration into the larger American society through cultural exchange.

The program’s mission aligns with ZIUSA’s aims and objectives, focusing on serving and advocating for Zomi refugees worldwide. It addresses community gaps by offering services that promote self-sufficiency and integration, including social assistance, skills development (such as English language education for adults), health promotion, cultural orientation, youth mentoring, and case management.

Leadership and Community Efforts

A dedicated, focused, and experienced leadership team voluntarily drives the program’s goals, ensuring the successful resettlement of refugees and meeting their basic needs.

Funded by Zomi individuals, the program ensures Zomi refugees receive appropriate treatment and protection under their human rights. Efforts include raising awareness, conducting research to highlight injustices, collaborating with the U.S. Resettlement Program for political actions, and distributing humanitarian assistance.

Community and Publications

The Zomi Refugee Program, created by ZIUSA’s governing Board, aims to build a strong cultural community through events, services, and programs. Many Zomi individuals in the U.S. are refugees who have resettled successfully.

As of December 2024, the program has published two significant reports: “Zomi Refugees Abroad” and “Report on the Zomi-Myanmar Refugees in Malaysia and India,” prepared by the Mission of Hope Team.

ZIUSA, through its Zomi Refugee Program, continues to play a vital role in advocating for and supporting Zomi refugees. The program ensures their basic needs are met and helps them integrate into new communities while preserving their cultural heritage. For more information, please visit Zomi Community USA.
