Politics & Governance

The Zomi people are an ethnic group primarily residing in the Chin State of Myanmar (Burma), as well as in neighboring regions such as the Indian states of Manipur, Mizoram, Nagaland and part of Bangladesh. They are part of the broader Chin-Kuki-Mizo ethnic groups and share linguistic, cultural, and historical similarities. The Zomi speak various dialects of the Tibeto-Burman language family and practice a mix of traditional animist beliefs and Christianity, which became widespread among them due to missionary activities in the 19th and 20th centuries.

The term "Zomi" is derived from the word "Zo," which is believed to refer to a person or people, with "mi" meaning "people" in many of their dialects. Therefore, "Zomi" can be understood as "Zo people." They are known for their rich cultural traditions, which include unique festivals, dances, and traditional attire. The Zomi people also have a strong sense of community and kinship.

Over the years, the Zomi have faced challenges related to political representation, ethnic identity, and human rights. They have often been involved in struggles for autonomy and recognition of their ethnic identity, both within Myanmar and in neighboring countries. Various Zomi organizations and advocacy groups work to promote their cultural heritage, protect their rights, and improve their socio-economic conditions.

The Zomi Revolutionary Army-Eastern Command (ZRA-EC) has several goals for the Zomi people:

1. Promoting Zomi Nationalism: The ZRA-EC aims to promote and protect the identity, culture, and rights of the Zomi people. They seek to unify the Zomi people across national borders (India, Myanmar, and Bangladesh) under a united “Zomi” identity.
2. Ensuring Autonomy and Self-Governance: The ZRA-EC aspires to ensure that the Zomi people have the right to self-governance and autonomy in their region. They aim to stand as a federal unit when a federal system is practiced in Myanmar.
3. Defending and Protecting the Community: The ZRA-EC is committed to defending and protecting the Zomi community from external threats and ensuring their safety and security.
4. Political Influence and Participation: The ZRA-EC seeks to have a significant political influence in the regions where the Zomi people reside. They aim to participate in political processes and negotiations to secure the interests of the Zomi people.

These goals reflect the ZRA-EC’s commitment to the welfare and empowerment of the Zomi people and their dedication to restoring truth and freedom in Zomi Land.

The Zomi Political Coordination Committee (ZPCC) was established to lead, guide, and conduct duties related to the Zomi people and their land, Zogam. The ZPCC plays a crucial role in coordinating political activities and advocating for the rights and interests of the Zomi community.

The ZPCC is responsible for:

1. Leadership: Providing leadership and direction on matters concerning the Zomi people.
2. Coordination: Coordinating efforts among various Zomi organizations and communities.
3. Advocacy: Advocating for the rights and interests of the Zomi people at local, national, and international levels.
4. Governance: Overseeing interim governance until democratically elected Zomi representatives are installed.
5. Mobilization: Mobilizing resources and support for the Zomi cause.

The ZPCC is a key player in the political landscape of the Zomi people, working towards their self-determination and autonomy. It produced the Zogam Charter for the Zomi land.

The Zogam Charter is a document that outlines the principles, objectives, and governance framework for the Zomi people. It was first published on September 18, 20212. The charter emphasizes the right to self-determination, autonomy, and the protection of land and resources for the Zomi people.

Key components of the Zogam Charterinclude:

• Objectives and Core Values: Upholding freedom, truth, and equity ideals.
• Authority and Duties: Defining the roles and responsibilities of governing bodies.
• Interim Governance: Establishing temporary governance structures until a permanent constitution is adopted.
• Security: Ensuring the safety and security of the Zomi people.
• Finance: Managing financial resources and operations.
• Mobilization and Operation: Organizing and executing plans for the Zomi community.
