The Zogam Development Fund (ZDF) Committee officially initiated its fundraising campaign on August 11, 2024. This committee was formed and elected during the Zomi Khawmpi 2024 event in Tulsa, Oklahoma. The campaign kicked off with a bang, raising US$ 100,000 during a 3-hour event on the first night. The Zomi community is buzzing with excitement about this campaign. The ultimate goal is to restore peace in Zogam, establish the rule of law in Zomi lands, and enable the Zomi people to form a government of the people, by the people, and for the people.
“We, the Zomi, have our political governance and constitution, known as the ‘Zogam Charter’,” said an observer. A volunteer leader added, “We are working diligently and doing our utmost to implement this charter and restore the Zomi government in our land.”
Another objective of this project is to ensure the safe return of internally displaced persons (IDPs) to their homes in Zomi lands, which their system will govern. An enthusiastic donor expressed, “This fund is crucial for Zogam as we face existential threats from some neighboring armed groups. We need to defend our land and our people.” He added that the Zomi people worldwide are fully supportive of this endeavor. The fundraising target is set at US$ 10 million. Everyone is encouraged to participate in this fundraising campaign to defend our land and protect our people, said a representative.
A local leader from the group said we have a long way to go because we are rebuilding a new system of governance in the Zomi Land and need tons of resources such as;
Infrastructure Development: Funds could be used to develop essential infrastructure in Zogam, such as roads, bridges, public buildings, and utilities.
Education: The ZDF might allocate funds towards educational initiatives, such as building schools, providing scholarships, or funding educational programs.
Healthcare: The fund could be used to improve healthcare facilities, provide medical equipment, or support public health initiatives.
Economic Development: The ZDF might spend the budget on businesses or provide loans to stimulate economic growth and job creation.
Cultural Preservation: Part of the fund could be used to preserve and promote Zomi culture, such as organizing cultural events, supporting local artisans, or preserving historical sites.
Legal and Governance Support: ZDF seems interested in establishing the rule of law and a government by the people.
Therefore, some funds might be used to support legal and governance initiatives. These are just some general needs we have to look further beyond the 10 Million, said an active supporter.
