Professor Kham Khan Suan Hausing is a distinguished Zomi scholar and political scientist whose academic career has earned recognition in India and internationally. His scholarship focuses on federalism, nationalism, ethnic conflict, territorial autonomy, democratic accommodation, Indian politics, and Northeast India.
He currently serves as a professor in the Department of Political Science, School of Social Sciences, at the University of Hyderabad, India. He also served as head of the Department of Political Science from August 3, 2020, to August 2, 2023.
His journey from Dimmual to some of India’s most respected universities—and later to the University of Pennsylvania as a Fulbright–Nehru Postdoctoral Research Fellow—represents an exceptional story of academic discipline, intellectual achievement, and service.
Early Life and Family Background
Professor Hausing was born on March 27, 1978, and raised in Dimmual, also known as Sumchinvum. He is one of seven children—five sons and two daughters—born to schoolteacher Pa Zel Za Kap and Nu Huai Khan Nem.
He is married to Nemmuankim. They have three children: a son, Kap Khual Hausing, and two daughters, Nem Hoih Hausing and Vung Hat Hausing. The family resides in Hyderabad, India.
Educational Journey
Professor Hausing completed his schooling through the tenth standard in Singngat. He subsequently attended Churachandpur Government College in Lamka for the eleventh and twelfth standards.
He earned his Bachelor of Arts with Honours in Political Science from S.D. College in Ambala Cantonment, Haryana. He later completed his Master of Arts, Master of Philosophy, and Doctor of Philosophy degrees at the Centre for Political Studies, Jawaharlal Nehru University in New Delhi—one of India’s most highly regarded institutions for the study of politics and the social sciences.
His doctoral dissertation was titled Identities, Autonomy and Patriotism: Asymmetric Federalism in North-East India. His MPhil dissertation examined the Special Status of the North-East in Indian Federalism.
While pursuing his MPhil and PhD degrees, he received a Junior Research Fellowship from the University Grants Commission in New Delhi.
Academic Career
Professor Hausing began his university teaching career in the Department of Political Science at Banaras Hindu University in Varanasi. He served there as a lecturer and assistant professor for more than eight years, from May 13, 2004, to August 30, 2012.
On August 31, 2012, he joined the University of Hyderabad as an associate professor. Three years later, on August 31, 2015, he was promoted to the rank of professor.
He attained the professorship at the remarkably young age of 37—an exceptional accomplishment in political science and the broader social sciences in India.

Professor Hausing received the prestigious Fulbright–Nehru Postdoctoral Research Fellowship for the 2012–2013 academic year.
As a Fulbright–Nehru scholar, he conducted postdoctoral research in the Department of Political Science at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia, one of the United States’ Ivy League universities.
Under the mentorship of Professor Brendan O’Leary, he completed a research project titled Asymmetric Federalism and the Question of Democratic Justice in Northeast India.
His selection represented a significant milestone in Zomi academic history. He became the first known Zomi scholar to conduct postdoctoral research at an Ivy League university through the Fulbright Fellowship program.
Professor Hausing also serves as an honorary senior fellow at the Centre for Multilevel Federalism at the Institute of Social Sciences in New Delhi.
Major Academic Awards and Recognition
T. N. Chaturvedi Award, 2016
Professor Hausing received the T. N. Chaturvedi Award for his article, “Multiculturalism and Intercultural Dialogue in North-East Region (NER) of India.”
The paper was recognized as the best article published in the Indian Journal of Public Administration during 2016. It appeared in volume 62, number 3 of the journal.
Professor Hausing received the award in New Delhi on October 11, 2017. The recognition affirmed the importance of his scholarship on multiculturalism, diversity, dialogue, and political accommodation in Northeast India.

Territory, Politics, Governance Best Paper Award, 2023
Professor Hausing’s article, “Autonomy and the Territorial Management of Ethnic Conflicts in Northeast India,” was published in the international journal Territory, Politics, Governance.
The article examined how different forms of territorial autonomy have been used to address ethnic conflict and political demands in Northeast India.
The Regional Studies Association selected the paper for the Territory, Politics, Governance Best Paper Award 2023, recognizing its outstanding contribution to regional studies.

Professor Hausing was invited to attend the Myanmar Peace Forum 2025 as a member of a four-person delegation from India.
The forum was held at the Mingalar Thiri Hotel in Nay Pyi Taw, Myanmar, from June 25 to 27, 2025. Its theme concerned the relationship among peace, elections, development, and national prosperity.
The Indian delegation included retired Ambassador Jaideep Mazumdar, senior journalist Atul Aneja, Asian Confluence Executive Director Sabyasachi Dutta, and Professor Hausing.
International scholars and experts from India, Italy, China, Russia, and Thailand were invited to share their perspectives. Professor Hausing’s participation reflected recognition of his expertise in federalism, ethnic relations, territorial autonomy, democratic governance, and conflict management.

Chief Guest at Zomi Khawmpi USA 2026
Zomi Community USA, Inc., also known as Zomi Innkuan USA, Inc., invited Professor Hausing to serve as the Chief Guest of Zomi Khawmpi USA 2026.
The national gathering was held at the Mabee Center in Tulsa, Oklahoma, from September 4 to 6, 2026. More than 6,000 Zomi people from communities across the United States attended, making it one of the largest Zomi gatherings held in the country.
The conference brought together Zomi families, community leaders, faith leaders, scholars, young people, and delegations from across the United States and other countries. It was organized around three guiding principles:
- Unity
- Development
- Preservation
In its official introduction, Zomi Community USA expressed its excitement and honor in welcoming Professor Hausing as Chief Guest, recognizing his academic achievements and standing within the Zomi community.
His selection as Chief Guest represented more than ceremonial recognition. It reflected the community’s respect for scholarship, intellectual leadership, and sustained academic achievement. It also connected his work on identity, federalism, democratic inclusion, and ethnic accommodation with the Zomi people’s continuing pursuit of unity, cultural preservation, development, and political understanding.

Contribution to the Zomi Political Forum
While attending Zomi Khawmpi USA 2026, Professor Hausing also participated as a panelist in the Zomi Political Forum held at the Zomi Community Center, known as Zomi Innpi, in Tulsa.
The forum was hosted by Thomas Tuang and featured Professor Hausing alongside Pu Tual Khan Suan. It provided a setting for discussing Zomi identity, political recognition, census classification, federalism, representation, and the future of the Zomi people.
One of the central concerns discussed at the forum was the treatment of Zomi identity in official census systems. The discussion examined how the absence or fragmentation of a collective Zomi identity in census classifications can affect political recognition, demographic visibility, language access, public policy, and community development.
Professor Hausing’s participation connected his academic expertise in identity, ethnic recognition, federalism, and democratic accommodation with practical questions facing Zomi communities in Myanmar, the United States, Australia, and elsewhere.
