In a defining moment for the Christian community across Northeast India, the Chin Baptist Association of India (CBA) officially adopted a new identity and name during its 66th General Council–2025, held on December 10–11 at the CBA Diamond Jubilee Hall in New Lamka, Churachandpur. Effective immediately, the denomination will be known as the Zomi Baptist Churches of India (ZBCI).

Delegates, pastors, youth representatives, and church leaders from across Manipur and beyond gathered for this historic assembly, which centered on spiritual renewal, organizational strengthening, and community empowerment. The adoption of the ZBCI name was widely welcomed as a restoration of the Zomi people’s shared ethnic and cultural identity—one deeply rooted in history yet not formally expressed in the association’s institutional name until now.

A respected leader, Dr. Neng Lian reflected on the significance of this turning point on his social media- Facebook:

“Today, December 11, 2025 (Thursday) the Zomi Baptist Churches of India (ZBCI) sees the light of this World.”

This transition represents renewed unity, clarity, and purpose for the Zomi Christian community, affirming long-standing cultural foundations while strengthening the church’s mission to serve both local congregations and the global Zomi diaspora.

Brief History of the Chin Baptist Association (CBA), Established 1961

The Chin Baptist Association (CBA) was founded in 1961 to unite and strengthen the Tedim Chin (Zomi) Christian community across Northeast India. Emerging during a period of rapid church expansion, the association was established to coordinate ministry efforts, encourage evangelism, support Christian education, and build unity among congregations.

In its early years, the CBA focused on training pastors, developing Sunday school programs, empowering youth and women’s fellowships, and planting churches across Manipur. It quickly became both a spiritual and cultural anchor for Tedim Chin (Zomi) Christians.

Throughout the 1970s, 1980s, and beyond, the CBA broadened its influence by supporting literacy programs, theological training, and humanitarian outreach. The creation of the Chin Baptist Relief & Development (CBRD) underscored its commitment to serving vulnerable communities through disaster relief and long-term development.

By the 1990s and 2000s, the association had grown into a significant Christian organization with regional influence and strong connections to the growing Zomi diaspora worldwide. It became a defender of cultural identity while adapting to changing social and missional needs.

After more than six decades of ministry, the association entered a new chapter in December 2025 when it formally adopted the name Zomi Baptist Churches of India (ZBCI)—an identity that honors both its historical roots and its continuing vision.

The 66th General Council–2025 concluded on December 11 with a renewed spirit of unity and purpose. Held at the CBA Diamond Jubilee Hall in New Lamka, the two-day gathering brought together pastors, leaders, youth delegates, and representatives under a shared theme of spiritual renewal and community empowerment.

Key Highlights of the Council

  • Reports on evangelism, education, and humanitarian outreach through CBRD
  • Strategic discussions on strengthening partnerships within the United Baptist Convention (UBC)
  • Election and installation of new leadership for the upcoming term
  • Special sessions on youth engagement, digital ministry, and expanding global outreach

Delegates reaffirmed their commitment to preserving Tedim Chin (Zomi) identity, while also embracing innovation to serve an increasingly globalized community.
A senior leader summarized the council’s heart:

“This council has reminded us that our strength lies in unity, our future in faithful stewardship, and our voice in speaking truth with love.”

The 66th General Council will be remembered as a milestone gathering that not only shaped the future of the denomination but also contributed significantly to the broader movement for Zomi reunification and Christian unity.

Zomi Press Editorial

The transition from the Chin Baptist Association of India to the Zomi Baptist Churches of India (ZBCI) marks a meaningful affirmation of shared heritage, unity, and identity. This decision reflects thoughtful leadership and a renewed commitment to cultural continuity and Christian fellowship.

Zomi Press commends this visionary step, which strengthens communal cohesion and positions the Zomi Christian community for a more united and confident future.
We extend our warm congratulations and pray for wisdom, grace, and blessings upon every home, congregation, and leader within ZBCI.
