Zomi Christian Theological Seminary recognizes one of the earliest Zomi women Bible students for her lifelong faith, Christian education, and ministry
PHOENIX, Arizona — Zomi Christian Theological Seminary honored Syanu Pi Luan Za Cing, one of the earliest surviving women students of the historic Tiddim Bible School, during its Fifth Commencement Ceremony held in Phoenix, Arizona, on July 19, 2026.
At the ceremony, she received the Fellow of Distinction: The First Zomi Bible Student Award in recognition of her pioneering role in Zomi theological education, Christian teaching, church ministry, music education, and her lifelong dedication to serving God and the Zomi people.
The award also recognized her place among the first generation of Zomi Bible students who received formal biblical training under American Baptist missionaries Franklin O. Nelson and Phileda Nelson during their ministry in Tedim between 1947 and 1950.
A Life Dedicated to God’s Calling
Syanu Pi Luan Za Cing was born on March 11, 1930, in Tedim, to Pu Ngul Langh (Suankhup) and Pi Ning Zen.
On November 11, 1945, she was baptized by Rev. Vial Nang at Dawbi Lui.
In 1946, she accepted Jesus Christ as her personal Savior through the ministry of Missionary Phileda Nelson. Following her conversion, she faithfully participated in Mangpau and Manglai, the women’s Christian fellowship ministries.
On April 2, 1947, she married Saya S. T. Hau Go in Ngennung Village in a wedding officiated by Missionary Nelson.
Among the First Women Bible Students
Later in 1947, Pi Luan Za Cing enrolled at the newly established Tiddim Bible School, becoming one of its earliest female students.
She was one of only two women in her class, the other being Syama Niang Khan Ciin (later Mrs. Rev. Kam Khaw Thang).
Her academic excellence earned her the distinction of Co-Valedictorian, and she graduated with a Gold Medal.
Following graduation, Missionary Nelson assigned her to serve at Mangkam.
Christian Education and Ministry
After graduation, Pi Luan Za Cing continued serving alongside Missionary Phileda Nelson through the Lungvakna ministry and in Naupang Sunday School, where she faithfully taught and nurtured children in the Christian faith.
In 1953, after the establishment of the Zomi Baptist Bible School (ZBBS), she joined Saya Lun Cung Nung and Saya Go Za Kham in teaching:
- Music
- Staff Notation
- Christian Education
She also assisted Saya S. T. Hau Go in preparing and developing Christian educational materials and curricula.
Faithful Partner in Ministry
Beginning in 1956, when Saya S. T. Hau Go became a Personal Secretary, Pi Luan Za Cing continued serving faithfully beside her husband, supporting his ministry and contributing significantly to the work of the church.
Her life exemplified faithful Christian partnership, humility, and steadfast service, influencing generations of believers through teaching, discipleship, and Christian education.
She later made her home in Yangon, where she continued to be remembered for her faithful service to Christ and the church.
A Historic Recognition
By presenting the Fellow of Distinction: The First Zomi Bible Student Award, Zomi Christian Theological Seminary honored Pi Luan Za Cing for her:
- pioneering role as one of the first Zomi women Bible students;
- academic excellence as a Gold Medal graduate and Co-Valedictorian;
- faithful ministry under Missionaries Franklin O. Nelson and Phileda Nelson;
- lifelong service in Christian education and Sunday School ministry;
- contributions to music, staff notation, and Christian education at Zomi Baptist Bible School; and
- enduring example of faithfulness, humility, and Christian leadership.
A Legacy of Faith
Syanu Pi Luan Za Cing belongs to the pioneering generation of Zomi Christian women whose commitment to biblical education helped lay the foundation for theological training among the Zomi people.
Her ministry reflects a life devoted to Christ, the teaching of Scripture, the nurturing of children, and the strengthening of the church through education and faithful service.
By honoring Pi Luan Za Cing, Zomi Christian Theological Seminary also honored the remarkable women of the first generation of Zomi Bible students whose lives continue to inspire pastors, teachers, missionaries, and Christian leaders today.
