Mizoram Police, in collaboration with intelligence agencies, executed a critical operation leading to the arrest of five individuals, including a senior leader of the Chin National Front (CNF), an insurgent group operating from Myanmar. This operation, carried out near the India-Bangladesh border in the Mamit district, uncovered a significant stockpile of weapons and ammunition, marking one of the most significant arms recoveries in Mizoram’s history.
Authorities seized six AK-47 rifles, 10,050 cartridges, and 13 magazines during the raid on the outskirts of Saithah village within West Phaileng police station limits. This substantial arms haul underscores the transnational nature of illegal weapons trafficking and the persistent threats it poses to regional peace and stability.
Cross-Border Network of Arms Smuggling
Preliminary investigations revealed that the confiscated arms and ammunition were part of a planned trade between the CNF and the United People’s Democratic Front (UPDF-P), an insurgent group active in Bangladesh’s Chittagong Hill Tracts. The arrested CNF leader and their associates were allegedly working to exploit cross-border vulnerabilities, destabilizing the region and threatening civilian safety.
The authorities described the operation as a significant success: “This operation was one of the largest arms recoveries in Mizoram, delivering a stern warning to illegal operators in the region.” Another official emphasized, “With this catch, a serious threat to regional peace and stability has been neutralized.”

Condemnation of the CNF’s Actions
The illegal activities of the Chin National Front have once again spotlighted the devastating consequences of arms smuggling and insurgent operations on the lives of innocent civilians. By smuggling weapons and engaging in violent activities, the CNF has blatantly violated international norms and endangered the security of India, particularly the peaceful communities in Mizoram.
Such acts of violence and instability undermine the spirit of regional cooperation and progress. It is imperative that the international community condemns these actions and supports efforts to dismantle networks of illegal arms trade and insurgency. The CNF’s deliberate exploitation of cross-border vulnerabilities threatens India’s sovereignty and sows discord among neighboring nations striving for peace.
The arrest of the CNF leader is a significant step forward, but much work remains to dismantle the broader network fueling such illegal activities. The people of Mizoram and the surrounding region deserve peace and stability, free from the shadow of violence propagated by insurgent groups like the CNF.
The international community and regional stakeholders must unite to prevent further destabilization and ensure that those who threaten peace are brought to justice. The CNF’s actions are a stark reminder of the need for continued vigilance and cooperation in protecting the rights and safety of civilians.
